UCOC

Each year all Grunions are encouraged to participate in the Ultimate Check-Off Challenge or "UCOC".  This challenge involves swimming all 18 individual events at a sanctioned masters meet over the course of a year (Team Banquet to Team Banquet).  With the end of the Short Course Yards (SCY) season it is a good time to check out the team standings to see how we are all doing.  Congratulations to Anita Cole and Kathy Wingert who have already finished all 18 events.  Check out the pdf file to see how you and other Grunions are doing.  It's not too late to start, there are lots of Long Course Meters (LCM) meets and Short Course Meters (SCM) meets before our November Banquet.  Sign up and take the Challenge. Click below:

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SPMS CHAMPS HOSTED BY THE GRUNIONS!! Print

2013SPMSSCM
For the tenth year in a row, the Long Beach Grunions hosted an incredibly successful 2013 SPMS SCM Championships.  Over 400 swimmers traveled from all over the country and Canada to battle it out, with swimmer's ages ranging from 18 to 92 years young.

While the Belmont Pool gets a complete make over, the meet was hosted at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in the City Of Commerce.  Although we all had our concerns about the smoothness of the meet, ONCE AGAIN, the Grunions triumphed, providing the USMS swimming community with one of the best run meets in the country.

In the pool, we were privileged to witness NINETEEN WORLD RECORDS AND ONE NATIONAL RECORD, along with countless personal best times.  A handful of Grunions also set some team records, which we will report in the upcoming weeks. We also placed 5th overall with 658 points, out of 56 swim teams!!!  Talk around the pool deck was that everyone loved the facility, loved the warmth of the Grunions, and the professionalism of the meet.  Congratulations to everyone who helped out, and thank you all for keeping our name in such high prestige.

And a special shout out to our meet director, the one and only Kenny Brisbin, who coordinated this three day meet to perfection.  There are quite a few Grunions who took control of their respected areas, but I just wanted to give an extra special thank you and standing applause to Kenny for really stepping up with the new venue change.

Also, if you'd like to catch any of the races from this past weekend, long onto www.liveswim.net and enjoy!

BrianSPMS

Each year, the SPMS recognizes a few key swimmers who have displayed exemplary commitments to masters swimming, achieved personal success at SPMS swim meets, and have been an inspiration to others.

The Grunions are honored to this year have one of their own be the recipient of the Swimmer Of The Year for 2013. Brian Kremers has been an inspiration to his teammates both in and out of the water.  In the water, Brian has achieved over 40 top ten swims in the nation leading into IGLA, plus an additional 5 more top ten times at IGLA Seattle. Also over the past year he was one of the most seen Grunions at workouts, attending on average five workouts per week.  Out of the pool, he revived the weekly Grunion Report as the must read newsletter of each week and coordinated with coaches the best possible relays for IGLA and SPMS Championship meets.  In addition, he inspired and motivated his teammates to do their best, all while dealing with a pretty serious spinal injury, which ended him up in the hospital for a fusion the week after IGLA.

Let's all congratulate Brian on this wonderful honor!!

Colin

Hi Grunions,

Please help me in welcoming our new Head Coach, Colin Williamson.  He brings to the team lots of experience including coaching, swimming with the Cal State Northridge Division 1 team, 3 time All-American in several events and was Named Alaska Coach of the year in 2008.  These are only some of his accomplishments.

Here is a note from Colin:

Dear Grunion swimmers,

Thank you so much for the warm welcome as the new Head Coach for the Grunions. I am looking forward to being on deck and getting to know more of the swimmers. Swimming for the Grunions the last few months, I have gotten a chance to see how passionate the swimmers are for not only the team itself, but for swimming as well. I hope to continue to grow the team in not only membership but team spirit as well.

We have a couple of exciting events coming up that I am looking forward to. I know that the December meet is a huge team effort and I look forward to seeing the team not only compete but also help to run a smooth meet.

I look forward to seeing you all at the pool. Go Grunions!

Colin

Colin will start coaching this week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings so please come to practice and show him some Grunion Love.
