Help Wanted: Timers - No Experience Necessary

We must fill at least 144 timing slots during our upcoming Short Course Meters Championship Meet on December 6-8. Plus a few extra for those inevitable moments when nature (or someone else) calls.

And we are asking all Grunions, former Grunions, and friends and family, partners and spouses, and neighbors and co-workers of Grunions to step up to help ensure that this year's meet continues to be the best regional meet in the country!

What does a timer have to do? Timers participate in shifts of 3 hours each (there are three shifts each day), and using provided stopwatches, they time and record swim times for the swimmer in their lane.

Do they receive any training? Yes, the head timer will conduct a brief training session prior to each shift to go over what's expected and how to do it.

Do we provide any refreshments? Yes, timers receive food and beverages courtesy of the team. And timers also will get a meet T-shirt.

What about parking? There is plenty of free parking at the pool.

What is the daily schedule? The meet starts at 9:00 am each day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Shifts are from 9am to 12pm, 12pm to 3pm, and 3pm to 6pm.  Timers need to be at the pool 30 minutes before their shift begins.

What does someone have to do to sign up as a volunteer timer? Visit the website at and follow the link under Upcoming Events. Forward this to link to anyone you think may be able to participate -- everyone matters!

Around 64 Grunions headed over to the Eagle's Nest Restaurant in Cypress last Saturday night for cocktails, dinner, good conversation, and a recap of the last 12 months, including awards, thanks to the board and coaches and some fun entertainment.
Master of Ceremonies Steve Ingram got the banquet rolling with a few jokes to relax the room.  Up first was the presentation of Coaches Award, which went to everyone's favorite Packer Fan, Pat Powers, who really gave it her all in the pool all season.  Next up, the Most Improved Grunion Award was presented to Peter Abudayyeh, for really coming to the pool with a positive attitude and willingness to learn from the coaches on deck.  Then our current Coaching Staff was presented with the team's appreciation, which we all know really helped us achieve our personal goals. IGLA High Point Award was a tie this year, between our two female SUPERSTARS, each going 5 for 5 in golds, Heather Lambert & Lauren Goebel.  Bart then had a recap of IGLA, a presentation of our 1st place trophy in the medium team category, and a viewing of the Pink Flamingo.  Team Spirit Award, the one award the ENTIRE team votes on, went to Stan Smith for really showing what team spirit is all about!
The Eight Days Of Week Challenge was up next, with Stan Smith, Rachel Jiang and Kathy Wingert being the only three Grunions to swim all eight workouts within ONE week.  For the ninth year in a row, John JC Werner & Brian Kremers kept their streak alive for doing the UCOC since it's installation.  Other tough swimmers stepping up to do every single swim event offered, were
Bart Parnes, Jax Cole, Mike Miranda, Heather Lambert, Anita Cole, Jeff Liu, Bill Sive, Stan Smith and Robyn Utu. Numerous team records were set over the past, and Stan Smith presented Heather Lambert, Jax Cole, Brian Kremers and himself with great looking trophies for having set 30, 40, 50 or over 60 records to coincide with their age groups.  Most Valuable Grunion Award, for his contribution in the water and out (probably this FABULOUS Grunion Report), went to Brian Kremers.  Up next, the Founder's Award, was awarded to Mike Baron, who with many personal roadblocks over this year, still brought to the pool a positive attitude that brushed off on all his teammates, and really showed what a Grunion is all about.  The Captain's Award, presented by the Captain to someone who has helped him over this past year, went to Erik Nielson.  The banquet finished with a thank you to the outgoing 2012-2013 Grunion Board, and an introduction to the 2013-2014 Board, which will be shared with you all next week.  And finally, Kenny Brisbin closed out the entertaining banquet with some fun awards that reminded the team, that although we may win medals and trophies, our main goal is to be one big family having fun! Thanks again to all that came!

  Dec Meet

Our meet is only a couple months away (Dec 6, 7, 8th), and with the success of last year's event, we are anticipating 500 swimmers. We have already received entries from teams as far away as New York.
This success is only achieved by every Grunion stepping up and volunteering, advertising and swimming. So we need you, and listed below are the areas that need your help:
Advertising - We need the entire team to work on ads for our program. These come in many sizes, from business cards to full page, black & white or color. Your best source is your business, local businesses, friends and family. The ad can be as simple as wishing the Grunions good luck or advertising your company.

As an incentive, this year if you bring in $200 worth of ads, the team will pay your $45 meet entry fee. With the current financial situation, it has been difficult to find a major sponsor. It is up to each one of us to bring in ads this year.  This is one of the major reasons your dues are only $35 per month.

We are hoping that each Grunion can bring in at least one business card-sized ($25) ad. This would make our goal reachable, but we need all the Grunions to help. If you need help creating or designing your ad, just let me know.

Volunteers - There are many areas to volunteer at, including deck marshal, registration, and, most importantly, being a timer. This Championship meet is a 3-day event, and volunteering should only take a few hours of your time. It is very important that we have your support. Here are few key points:

Registration: This is primarily a morning function. You are the first face they see when checking in each day, so sign up and show them the hospitality the Grunions are known for.

Goodie-Bag Items - Please work with your own business or favorite local business for advertising items in our goodie-bags. These can be flyers, pens and samples of product ... you name it. The options are endless and this is a fantastic way for companies to advertise.

Swimming - This is our event so if you don't swim all year long this is the one meet we need you to compete at. Every event is offered at our meet, so you can pick and choose what you like. Most importantly, we need you to swim relays and if this is your first Grunion Swim Meet we will pay for your entry. Remember this is the one meet where you will have 50+ Grunions supporting and cheering you on.

Click on the links above for the Ad/Sponsorship pricing and a sample sponsorship letter for you to use. The Grunions are a non-profit organization, so all donations are tax exempt (check with your tax preparer for specifics).

This is our big event -- let's show the national and international swimming community what the Grunions are all about.

Please email me (

Let's once again show the swimming community how fantastic the Grunions are!

In case you missed it, a little more than a handful of Grunions were tricked by the Evil Witch Jacobus and casted a spell upon to come to her workout, Halloween evening.  But in the end, Witch Jacobus' little Grunions burned all those calories needed, to allow them ghoulish treats to eat, guilt free.
